Reason:
Aftertreatment Diesel Exhaust Fluid Dosing Unit Input Lines – Condition Exists. The aftertreatment diesel exhaust fluid dosing unit is unable to prime.

Effect:
Possible reduced engine performance

Circuit Description:
The diesel exhaust fluid dosing unit lines are responsible for transporting diesel exhaust fluid between the dosing unit, dosing valve, and diesel exhaust fluid tank.

Component Location:
There are three diesel exhaust fluid lines. One line is between the dosing unit and dosing valve, and the other two lines are between the dosing unit and the diesel exhaust fluid tank. These lines can be partially hidden from view by the SCR system and other vehicle components. Line routing will vary, based on the aftertreatment architecture and the OEM.

Conditions for Running the Diagnostics:
This diagnostic runs when the SCR system is trying to prime.

Conditions for Setting the Fault Codes:
The aftertreatment diesel exhaust fluid dosing unit was unable to successfully prime after multiple attempts.

Action Taken When the Fault Code is Active:
1) The ECM illuminates the amber CHECK ENGINE lamp and/or the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) immediately when the diagnostic runs and fails.
2) Engine torque will be severely reduced.

Vehicle speed will be limited to 8 km [5 mi] per hour after extended engine operation with the fault code active.

Conditions for Clearing the Fault Code:
1) To validate the repair, perform the “Aftertreatment Diesel Exhaust Fluid System Leak Test” found under “ECM Diagnostic Tests” in the INSITE™ electronic service tool
2) The fault code status displayed by INSITE™ electronic service tool will change to INACTIVE immediately after the diagnostic runs and passes.
3) The ECM will turn off the amber CHECK ENGINE lamp immediately after the diagnostic runs and passes.
4) For On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) engines, the ECM will extinguish the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) after three consecutive trips where the diagnostic runs and passes.
5) The Reset All Faults command in INSITE™ electronic service tool can be used to clear active and inactive faults, as well as extinguish the MIL for OBD applications.

N/A

Possible Causes:
1) Low aftertreatment diesel exhaust fluid level in the diesel exhaust fluid tank
2) The line heaters are not successfully thawing the frozen diesel exhaust fluid
3) The diesel exhaust fluid pressure line between the dosing unit and dosing valve is kinked, broken, or disconnected
4) The diesel exhaust fluid suction line between the diesel exhaust fluid tank and the dosing unit is kinked, broken, or disconnected
5) Malfunctioning diesel exhaust fluid dosing unit
6) The diesel exhaust fluid suction and return lines between the dosing unit and diesel exhaust fluid tank are reversed
7) Debris from the diesel exhaust fluid tank. If debris is found in the diesel exhaust fluid tank, clean the diesel exhaust fluid tank thoroughly and fill with certified diesel exhaust fluid.

FAQs

What is the code 3362 FMI 31? ›

This fault can be caused by an OEM side wiring issue, a faulty DEF pump, a faulty DEF doser or a leak/restriction in the system.

What is code 3596 Cummins? ›

The root cause of the 3596 codes is a cracked suction tube in the DEF tank head assembly suction tubes.

What does FMI mean in fault code? ›

FMI stands for failure mode identifier—this part of the fault code tells you what type of problem your truck has. For example, in the fault code SPN 3226 FMI 13, the SPN number 3226 tells you the problem is with the SCR outlet NOx sensor and FMI 13 tells you that the signal from the part is unavailable.

What is the code for fuel vapor leak detection pump? ›

P2401 and P2402 codes indicate that there's an issue with your evaporative emissions (EVAP) system. The “Leak Detection Pump” is part of the EVAP system, testing for system leaks and blockages to ensure that the system is working as intended.

What is the code 1679 on a Cummins engine? ›

1679 Aftertreatment DEF tank temperature – data erratic, intermittent, or incorrect. 1683 Aftertreatment DEF tank heater – voltage above normal, or shorted to high source. 1684 Aftertreatment DEF tank heater – voltage below normal, or shorted to low source.

What is code SPN 168 Cummins? ›

This is a battery voltage related fault code indicating that low battery voltage or fluctuations in voltage have been detected going to your control modules. I would start by testing all of your batteries with a load tester and digital battery tester individually for possible bad cells or other internal problems.

Where is the DEF pressure sensor on a Cummins? ›

The def fluid pressure sensor is built into the def pump. The def pump will be attached to the rear of the def tank mounting brackets. This is a non serviceable part and can not be replaced without the entire pump assembly being changed.

What does FMI 31 mean? ›

SPN 521049/FMI 31

Description This Code Sets When There is a Code Present for the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) Tank Level, DEF Dosing Unit, DEF Pump, NOx Sensors, Blocked DEF Line, DEF Quality, NOx Efficiency, Selective Catalyst Reduction (SCR) Harness and/or SCR Sensor.

What is the code for fuel injection pressure sensor? ›

The P0194 code issue is related to the fuel rail pressure (FRP) sensor, which the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) uses to determine how much pressure is going to the fuel injectors. The PCM effectively controls the amount of fuel going through the fuel injectors to maintain desired power and fuel efficiency.

What is cat fault code 3362? ›

SPN 3362 FMI 31 states: "Aftertreatment 1 Diesel Exhaust Fluid Dosing Unit Input Lines - Condition Exists." Looks like it's a problem in the line between the tank and dosing valve.

What is obd2 code 31? ›

Code 31 is thrown by a signal from the vacuum sensor. Diagnosis is an open or short detected continuously in the vacuum sensor circuit.
