Is there a way to see what an unsent message was? ›

The recipient can read your message before you unsend it. If you unsend a message, it will disappear from the recipient's screen, but they'll be notified that you unsent it.

In most cases, you can't unsend a text message you've already sent on your Android. Once you send a text in your Android's built-in texting app, it's out of your hands.

And no, there's no way to retrieve that unsent message. Once you unsend it, it's gone. What you can do, though, is copy the contents of the message before you unsend it.

Scroll down and look for the “Drafts” folder and tap on it to see any unsent messages. If you completed writing an email and sent it, but it couldn't be sent due to an issue like bad network, you'll find it in the “Outbox” folder.

Unsent messages are deleted from both devices. If you or the other person unsend a message, it means neither of you can access it. In this case, you can try viewing the message from your notifications or notification history, if you cleared them.

You can permanently unsend a message that you've sent or just hide a message from your view. If you select Unsend for you, other people in the chat will still see the messages in their chat screen. If you select Unsend for everyone, people included in the chat won't be able to see the unsent message.

You can retract a message you send, as can others who send something to you. But is there a way to see that message anyway after it has been unsent? The short answer is no, but there are some workarounds and ways to see unsent messages from other apps beyond iMessage.

Check the Outbox for unsent email

In Mail, go to your list of mailboxes. Tap Outbox. If you don't see an Outbox, then your email was sent. Tap an email in the Outbox.

Unsending removes the message from your recipient's device. If you're sending messages to someone who isn't using iOS 16, iPadOS 16, macOS 13, or later, the original message remains in the conversation.
